Priorat: the home of Garnacha and Cariñena
Priorat is small, steep and intense, a remote corner of Catalonia where old Garnacha and Cariñena vines dig into black slate called llicorella. The wines are deep, mineral and powerful, and the region's revival in the 1990s turned it into one of only two Spanish regions with the top DOCa classification, alongside Rioja. It is the cult red for people who already know Rioja.
The wines
Dense, concentrated reds built on old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena, with dark fruit, firm structure and a distinct stony minerality from the slate. Small production keeps the best names scarce and prized.
Where to go
The villages, including Gratallops and the hub town of Falset just outside the zone, sit among near-vertical terraces. The landscape is rugged and dramatic, and the wineries are small and personal.
Eat
Hearty Catalan mountain cooking, grilled meats, game and strong cheeses, matches the power of the wines. The nearby Montsant region offers similar wines at gentler prices.
Getting there
Fly into Barcelona or Reus, then drive about two hours inland. A car is essential given the remote, mountainous terrain and scattered cellars.
