What Margaret River teaches: maritime climate
Margaret River makes five percent of Australia's wine and twenty percent of its premium wine. The Indian and Southern Oceans bracket the peninsula, ironing out the vintages and stretching the ripening season. The Cabernet sits between Bordeaux and Napa in style, and regularly beats both in blind tastings. This is what maritime climate does.
The wines
Cabernet Sauvignon of structure and restraint, and Chardonnay that competes with Burgundy at half the price. The Sauvignon-Semillon blends are the region's easy-drinking calling card.
Where to go
Vasse Felix, the region's first vineyard (1967), pairs its museum cellar with one of Australia's best winery restaurants. Leeuwin Estate's Art Series Chardonnay is the national benchmark, and its summer concerts on the lawn are a WA institution. Cullen, biodynamic since before it was fashionable, makes the thinking drinker's Cabernet. Between tastings: Prevelly's surf breaks and the karri forests of Boranup.
Eat
The winery restaurants lead: Vasse Felix and Leeuwin both deserve the long lunch. In town, settle for excellent coffee and bakeries that punch far above a town of 8,000.
Getting there
Three hours south of Perth on good roads. Stay two nights minimum; the region rewards slowness.
