What Margaret River teaches: maritime climate

Margaret River's defining feature is the ocean nearby. Sea breezes moderate hot afternoons, diurnal swings stay relatively gentle, and winter-dominant rainfall gives growers reliable conditions. The result is Cabernet and Chardonnay with steady ripening, freshness, and the region's clean maritime line.

The wines

Cabernet Sauvignon with structure and freshness, Chardonnay with a clean maritime line, and crisp Sauvignon-Semillon blends that make the region easy to recognise on a list.

Where to go

Vasse Felix, the region's first vineyard (1967), pairs its museum cellar with a polished winery restaurant. Leeuwin Estate's Art Series Chardonnay is a regional benchmark, and its summer concerts on the lawn are a WA institution. Cullen is one of the names to know for serious Cabernet. Between tastings: Prevelly's surf breaks and the karri forests of Boranup.

Eat

The winery restaurants lead: Vasse Felix and Leeuwin both deserve the long lunch. In town, settle for excellent coffee and bakeries that punch far above a town of 8,000.

Getting there

Three hours south of Perth on good roads. Stay two nights minimum; the region rewards slowness.
