Colchagua Valley
Chile's red-wine heartland, with the Andes as a backdrop.

Colchagua Valley: the home of Cabernet and Carmenère
Chile makes some of the most reliable value reds in the world, and the Colchagua Valley is its showcase. Warm, sunny and framed by the Andes, it ripens bold Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère, the lost Bordeaux grape that Chile made its own. Together with the cooler Maipo Valley closer to Santiago, it is the easy, scenic introduction to Chilean wine.
The wines
Cabernet Sauvignon is ripe and structured, while Carmenère, rediscovered in Chile after vanishing from Bordeaux, gives soft, dark, herb-tinged reds found almost nowhere else. Maipo, nearer the capital, makes some of the country's most prestigious Cabernet.
Where to go
Santa Cruz is the visitor hub of Colchagua, with grand estates along a well-organised wine route and even a vineyard train. Maipo's wineries sit within easy reach of Santiago for a shorter trip.
Eat
Chilean cooking pairs seafood from the long coast with hearty grilled meats inland. Cabernet and Carmenère with an asado barbecue is the regional default.
Getting there
Fly into Santiago. Maipo is under an hour away, while Colchagua is about two and a half hours south by car or tour.
