Wachau: the home of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling

The Wachau is a short, spectacular stretch of the Danube where steep stone terraces grow Austria's finest whites. Grüner Veltliner, the country's signature grape, makes wines that are peppery, citrussy and food-friendly, while Riesling here rivals Germany's best. It is an easy, beautiful day trip from Vienna and a favourite stop on Danube river cruises.

The wines

Grüner Veltliner ranges from light and zippy to rich and ageworthy, with a trademark white-pepper note. Riesling is dry, mineral and intense. The Wachau uses its own ripeness scale, with Smaragd marking the fullest, most concentrated wines.

Where to go

The villages of Dürnstein, Spitz and Weissenkirchen line the river beneath ruined castles and terraced vineyards. Krems anchors the eastern end. The whole valley is compact and walkable in parts, with cellars and heurigen wine taverns throughout.

Eat

Wiener Schnitzel, freshwater fish and apricot dishes, the Wachau is famous for its apricots, suit the bright whites. A glass of Grüner in a riverside tavern is the regional ritual.

Getting there

Fly into Vienna, then take the train or drive about an hour west to Krems. River boats run through the valley in season, and cycling the riverside path is popular.
