Swartland: the home of Syrah and Chenin

While the tour buses head to Stellenbosch, the people who follow wine closely watch the Swartland. This warm, dry wheat-and-vine country north of Cape Town is full of old, unirrigated bush vines, and a generation of independent growers has turned it into South Africa's most dynamic region, led by characterful Syrah and old-vine Chenin Blanc.

The wines

Syrah is the red signature, savoury and peppery rather than jammy. Old-vine Chenin Blanc makes textured, mineral whites, and Mediterranean blends abound. The ethos is low-intervention and expressive of place.

Where to go

The pretty village of Riebeek-Kasteel is the hub, with tasting rooms, restaurants and a relaxed feel. Many of the best producers are small and visited by appointment, which is part of the region's appeal.

Eat

Country cooking, olives from the local groves, and braai, the South African barbecue, suit the bold reds. The village restaurants punch above their weight.

Getting there

Fly into Cape Town, then drive about an hour north. A car is essential, and the Swartland pairs well with a wider Cape wine trip.
